I just love New Year's Eve. Of course, it used to be a lot more fun than it is now, but I still love it. New Year's Eve will always remind me of my biggest celebrity crush, Joe McIntyre (yes, the New Kid On The Block). Why? 'Cause it's his birthday! New Year's Eve will also always remind me of being pregnant. With my first, I was pregnant on New Year's Eve 1999, and I didn't know it. I was baffled by why I couldn't seem to stomach more than one drink that night, and why the only drink that sounded remotely appealing was a screwdriver (pregnant women in my family always crave oranges and orange juice). I found out about a week later. With my second, on New Year's Eve, we thought I might be pregnant. I had written in my day planner "OK to start trying" on December 25, 2001, and on December 21, my husband saw it. He said, "It's close enough, let's start now!" (he just didn't want to wear a condom, I am sure). I said, "Well.. I think I'm ovulating now, actually", and we went for it. So on New Year's Eve, I decided to take a pregnancy test to see if I could drink some champagne. It was negative, so I went and poured myself a glass. Dan went to change Darien and get him ready for bed. I looked at the test again, probably 10 minutes after I took it, and there was an EXTREMELY faint line. I said, "I SEE ONE! I SEE A LINE!" and I ran in to show Dan. He agreed that there was a line, and another test the next day proved it. And yes, I did finish that glass of champagne.
This year, I am making mini-pizzas for the kids, spinach & artichoke dip and hot wings for us, and a pitcher of Sangria. I feel like starting in on the Sangria right now, and I haven't even had my second cup of coffee yet. In fact, I'm still in my red & gray plaid pajama pants, and gray zippered hoodie (gotta have easy boob access for Mr. Mason) - I haven't showered yet. And yet, I have lip gloss on. OK, so it's just Smith's Rosebud Salve, but it counts.
